Respite services provide temporary care to individuals, allowing families or caregivers to handle emergencies and personal situations or take a break. Respite may be provided in the individual/family home, a qualified caregiver’s home, regional center or other locations.
Respite is family arranged. Families may choose a Board- certified respite caregiver or one of their own depending on the funding source. Respite services are accessed through a person’s Early Interventionist or Service Coordinator. Funding is limited.
For more information and availability of respite services, please contact your Early Interventionist, Service Coordinator or an FSS Supervisor at 843-805-5800.
To become a Board-certified respite provider, the potential caregiver must meet qualifications established by SCDDSN, including a criminal background check and completing required training. Some of the necessary training can be done by self-study unit and completion of competency testing. The self-study material can be accessed here [link to materials].
