The Disabilities Board of Charleston County has always maintained strong connections to the Charleston community.  Without the involvement of our partners in the community, we could not provide high quality services and maintain a positive quality of life for the people we support.

Local service organizations have long-standing relationships with our agency.  The St. Andrews Rotary Club hosts an annual holiday luncheon for individuals served through DBCC’s Adult Day Services programs.  The Charleston Lowcountry Civitans sponsor recreational activities for individuals we serve.  The Father Ronald P. Anderson Council 8900 of the Knights of Columbus is a regular donor supporting our programs and services through numerous grants.  Several local Boy Scout troops have adopted facilities through Eagle Scout projects, with scouts designing, funding, and carrying out repairs and upgrades to both residential and day program facilities.  Through the Trident United Way’s Day of Caring, our facilities have received needed face-lifts.  The Ladies Benevolent Society has been a reliable and supportive sponsor of the Charles Webb Center for many years.  TBonz restaurant generously supports Camp Star of Hope each summer.  Numerous local businesses such as A.W. Shucks and First Citizens Bank support the activities of the Disabilities Board through the Disabilities Foundation of Charleston County, as well.

The Disabilities Board also has close ties to local educational institutions.  Physical, occupational, and speech therapy students from the Medical University of South Carolina work with children at the Charles Webb Center.  Our professional staff members have supervised numerous students from the University of South Carolina, South Carolina State University, and Trident Technical College in field placement and internships.  Students from the Citadel, the College of Charleston and Porter-Gaud School assist with dances for the individuals we serve several times each year, and the Best Buddies program at the College of Charleston pairs up students with intellectually disabled peers for recreational and social activities.

The athletes in our services are afforded wonderful opportunities through the Special Olympics and the Miracle League.  Bowling, swimming, baseball and other sports keep the individuals supported through DBCC active and involved in their community.

DBCC maintains positive relationships with other agencies that serve people with special needs in the Charleston area.  The Disability Resource Center generously supports the DBCC Angel tree project each year.  Carolina Autism, the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program, and Goodwill industries have all partnered with DBCC for use of our Human Rights Committee.  Goodwill Industries has been an instrumental partner with Hope Services to develop employment opportunities for our individuals in their retail stores.  Residents of our group homes participate in therapeutic programming through local groups such as Dukes Ceramics, Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding, and Healing Farms Ministries.  These and other parts of the Charleston community enrich the lives of the people we support and allow the Disabilities Board of Charleston County to offer a wide variety of rewarding experiences to our consumers.
