History

The Charles Webb Center began approximately 70 years ago in a church basement in downtown Charleston, SC. It was first known as the Charleston Chapter of the Crippled Children’s Society. At that time the center was geared toward providing educational services for the orthodpedically handicapped. In 1963, the center expanded its focus, with the affiliation of Easter Seals, to include other physical and mental disabilities (visual, speech, hearing, and mental retardation) and an array of other medical involvement. In 1992 the center disaffiliated from Easter Seals and began to serve children who were typically developing. In 1993 the Webb Center became a program of the Disabilities Board of Charleston County. In July 2004 due to financial issues, the Webb Center returned to a center that serves only children with disabilities or special needs.

Mission

The mission of Charles Webb is to aid in each child’s growth and development through an educational program, to develop each child’s sense of self-esteem, and to strengthen each child’s social, language and preschool skills.

The Webb Center focuses on the individual strengths of each child to maximize his or her learning in all areas of development.
